Sustainable transportation at its finest. The net effect of wood production is the opposite of a carbon-footprint, it actually improves our environment. It is exceedingly abundant. You might even say it grows on trees. The Elettrico is a marriage between the unsurpassed beauty and ride quality of wood and the technological genius of the Shimano Steps e-bike system. Sold as …
Stretching the wheelbase to accommodate two riders improves the already incomparable smoothness of a wood-framed single bike without compromising the lateral stiffness required of a tandem. Who We Are
Sojourn Cyclery was born out of a convergence of passions true to one man's roots. Having grown up in a shop, Jay Kinsinger has been a bicycle enthusiast since the first time he turned a crank, circa 1967. In 1981, he brazed his first steel bicycle frame and pedaled the 4,250 mile Bikecentennial (now American Cycling Association) trans-American trail on her maiden voyage. Jay also has a great love for woodworking. He combines his aptitude for woodworking and bicycle mechanics to produce wooden framed bicycles. As a mechanical engineering professor, Jay advises bright engineering students at Cedarville University. These students use state-of-the-art testing equipment and computer aided engineering to evaluate and prove the strength of the wooden frames.

"I recently took Sojourn's wooden e-bike for a demonstration ride. I wanted to see if the e-bike would help me be able to ride with my husband. He just finished a cross country bike tour and his pace is too fast for me to keep up with. The bike was amazing. It helped me ride faster, but I still felt I was getting a workout at my usual pace. The wooden frame was beautiful and well integrated with the e-bike components. This particular model had an internal transmission which easily shifted. The belt drive was a wonderful way to keep grease off my clothes too."
"A mid-life crisis can cause a man to do silly things like buy a convertible or join a gym. I instead bought a wooden bicycle from Sojourn. Jay Kinsinger combines a great depth of knowledge in woodworking with a beautiful, understated design aesthetic. But it was his willingness to share his knowledge that made the process of building my first ever custom bicycle a fantastic experience.
And the bicycle itself? I call it "Butter" because it is the smoothest bicycle I have ever ridden. While good tires and frame design certainly contribute, there is no doubt that the frame is absorbing the high frequency shocks. But, in the end, you should expect this of a custom handcrafted bicycle. What sets my Sojourn apart is that the hand finished black walnut frame is stunningly beautiful. I tell my friends I bought a functional work of art, with an emphasis on functional."
I’m a lifetime cyclist and have enjoyed riding in the US and Europe with family and friends. I’m also a novice wood worker and love building things with my hands. When I found out I could build my own walnut bike frame, I jumped at the opportunity! The workshop process was fantastic. The sequence of steps was well thought out and the pacing was good. The founder of Sojourn Cyclery, Jay Kinsinger, is so talented and has the heart of a teacher. I learned a great deal through the process and always knew I would not make an unrecoverable mistake with Jay nearby to provide guidance and suggestions. I now have a gorgeous, lifetime frame that always turns heads and has people asking, “Is that bike made out of wood?”. You bet it is!
